The term “socialism with Chinese characteristics” was prominently used by Deng Xiaoping, but Chinese characteristics were there from the beginning in the socialism of the People’s Republic. Even strong elements of a managed market economy of the kind Deng is known for having accepted were in fact there in the 1950s.
