[Rousseau and Romanticism (1991 (1919)), kap. 1 & 2.]
And this means in practice to put emotional expansion in the place of spiritual concentration at the basis of life and morals.” [Ibid. 44.]
[Utöver Sources of the Self, i vilken “The Expressivist Turn” är rubriken på kapitel 21, återfinnes relevanta reflektioner över frågan om det autentiska självet även i Taylors The Ethics of Authenticity (1992).]
I comment briefly on the Fourth Political Theory here.
Translated by Mark Sleboda & Michael Millerman Foreword by Alain Soral
Arktos, 2012 Amazon.co.uk
Back Cover:
All the political systems of the modern age have been the products of three distinct ideologies: the first, and oldest, is liberal democracy; the second is Marxism; and the third is fascism. The latter two have long since failed and passed out of the pages of history, and the first no longer operates as an ideology, but rather as something taken for granted. The world today finds itself on the brink of a post-political reality – one in which the values of liberalism are so deeply embedded that the average person is not aware that there is an ideology at work around him. As a result, liberalism is threatening to monopolise political discourse and drown the world in a universal sameness, destroying everything that makes the various cultures and peoples unique.
According to Alexander Dugin, what is needed to break through this morass is a fourth ideology – one that will sift through the debris of the first three to look for elements that might be useful, but that remains innovative and unique in itself. Dugin does not offer a point-by-point program for this new theory, but rather outlines the parameters within which it might develop and the issues which it must address. Dugin foresees that the Fourth Political Theory will use the tools and concepts of modernity against itself, to bring about a return of cultural diversity against commercialisation, as well as the traditional worldview of all the peoples of the world – albeit within an entirely new context. Written by a scholar who is actively influencing the direction of Russian geopolitical strategy today, The Fourth Political Theory is an introduction to an idea that may well shape the course of the world’s political future.
Alexander Dugin (b. 1962) is one of the best-known writers and political commentators in post-Soviet Russia. In addition to the many books he has authored on political, philosophical and spiritual topics, he currently serves on the staff of Moscow State University, and is the intellectual leader of the Eurasia Movement. For more than a decade, he has also been an advisor to Vladimir Putin and others in the Kremlin on geopolitical matters, being a vocal advocate of a return of Russian power to the global stage, to act as a counterweight to American domination.
JOB’s Comment:
Readers of this blog who are also familiar with Dugin’s thought and its traditions will have a fairly clear idea of what I agree and what I disagree with in this book. I may come back and spell this out myself later. For now, I just want to point out that Dugin says that what he does is to invite us to a dialogue about an unfinished Fourth Political Theory in the process of development and articulation. He even describes it, as it exists today, rather as “a correctly posed question” than in terms of specific answers. I fully agree we need a Fourth Political Theory, and would therefore try to contribute something to the dialogue about it. “What the Fourth Political Theory is, in terms of what it opposes, is now quite clear”, Dugin writes in the second chapter after having explained his view of this. “It is neither fascism, nor Communism, nor liberalism. In principle, this kind of negation is rather significant. It embodies our determination to go beyond the usual ideological and political paradigms and to make an effort to overcome the inertia of the clichés within political thinking. This alone is a highly stimulating invitation for a free spirit and a critical mind. I do not really understand why certain people, when confronted with the concept of the Fourth Political Theory, do not immediately rush to open a bottle of champagne, and do not start dancing and rejoicing, celebrating the discovery of new possibilities.”

“It is a culture which is individualist in…three senses…: it prizes autonomy; it gives an important place to self-exploration, in particular of feeling; and its visions of the good life generally involve personal commitment. As a consequence, in its political language, it formulates the immunities due people in terms of subjective rights. Because of its egalitarian bent, it conceives these rights as universal.” [Sources of the Self, 305.]
[Om historietänkandets och historieskrivningens förändringar, exempelvis Leonard Krieger, Time’s Reasons: Philosophies of History Old and New (1989).]
När han hävdar att “The self-conception we call individuality came into prominence as a by-product of a profound change in Western man’s historical outlook”, är väl detta emellertid kanske ett uttryck för den motsatta, alltför ensidiga tolkningen. [The Value of the Individual, 261.]
Man kunde å ena sidan se kulturens utveckling som en utveckling i betydelsen en gradvis manifestation av “a preformed destiny or nature”, lägga vikten huvudsakligen vid “causation within the historical actor”, vid “something…like Shaftesbury’s ‘inner form’, a spiritual power that gives shape to matter”, vid det historiskt närvarande som “an imperfect expression of the ideal nature toward which it is moving, and thus only a step on the road to indefinite perfectibility or even perfection.”
Och en av frukterna av denna nya syn var “our self-conception as individualities”: “The emergence of individuality…depended on the gradual fusion of two ideas: the idea of genuine historical development and the idea of individuality as a value.” [Ibid. 263.] Our modern sense of history and of individuality grew from the fusion of an emergent genetic sense and a growing concern for singularity.” [Ibid. 332.]
The New Art of Autobiography: An Essay on the ‘Life of Giambattista Vico Written by Himself’ (1991).]
Även för Voltaire var det historiska perspektivet oundgängligt för belysningen av nuets (miss)förhållanden, och “[t]he past could be explained only by telling its story”.
[Hur detta förbereds redan under den tyska upplysningen undersöks av Peter H. Reill i The German Enlightenment and the Rise of Historicism (1975).]
Prophetic Wisdom about the Myths and Idols of mass culture and popular religious cultism, the new priesthood of scientific and political materialism, and the secrets of Enlightenment hidden in the body of Man

The Dawn Horse Press, 1980
Blurbs on the Back Cover:
This is a mighty book of insight… a penetrating, comprehensive critique of popular cults and mass culture. This book does two things absolutely critical for the survival of Man. First, it exposes the fundamental flaws of organized religion, science, and politics. Second, it gives clear indications for establishing a culture based on wisdom and love. Anyone who is the least bit concerned about his or her own well-being – physical, mental, spiritual – and that of the world should consider the words of Da Free John. He teaches and is a living demonstration of the present Divine Condition and evolutionary future of the human race.
John White, author, Pole Shift, and editor, The Highest State of Consciousness
If you read no other book in your lifetime, read this beautiful, profound, disturbing, and hopeful book.
Worth Summers, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology, California State University
The function of a great educational work is to lead thereader into a new awareness. The function of a great spiritual writing is to jolt and insipire the reader into a new state of Being. This book is both. No one can really read it without being changed in the process. It is like a rapid-fire succession of electric shocks, each carrying the message: Wake up!…A powerfully effective “de-hypnitizer”…that will not let you rest until you see clearly – and so seeing, choose to act. In modern society’s time of troubles, this is a much-needed book.
Willis Harman, President, The Institute of Noetic Sciences
If there is a man in this country today who is God-lllumined, that man is Da Free John. The proof is in this book. Here is the most ancient tradition of mankind expressed in a way that is startlingly modern. Da Free John is a force to be reckoned with.
Roy Finch, Professor of Philosophy, Hunter College, City University, New York
Da Free John’s teaching is, I believe, unsurpassed by that of any other spiritual teacher, of any period, of any place, of any time, of any persuation.
Ken Wilber, author, The Atman Project, and editor, Re-Vision Journal
In our world of political chaos and potential nuclear holocaust, there must be many men and women who are awake to the madness around us and ready to hear the voice speaking in these discourses. I pray that this book inspires them to expand in love and to become guides for the millions who are still blinded y fear and mistrust. The need for truth is urgent.
Robert Hall, M.D., Co-founder, Lomi School and the Gestalt Institute of San Francisco.
JOB’s Comment:
The main title of this book is entirely satirical, and aimed at the illusions of the “scientific worldview” (“scientific proof”), conventional and popular exoteric religion (“the existence of God”), and the materialist politics of our time (“announced by the White House”). This is one of Jones’s big books, and in its first chapters it focuses a little more on the general contemporary mass culture shaped by these forces than his other big ones, most of which, like The Enlightenment of the Whole Body, deal primarily with his spiritual teaching in itself. Its third chapter is entitled ‘Scientific Proof of the Existence of God Will Not Be Announced by the White House’.
